In 1919, Tom and Fred Ward started Doncaster's first furniture company in Cemetery Road. Ward Brothers bought their first warehouse at 8, 9, and 11 Society Street in 1922. In 1930, they opened their first retail location at 32 Harewood Terrace. During the Second World War, John Harlow and his brother managed to keep the company's doors open by selling utility furniture.
In 1958, four years after one of the original founders' death, through the purchase of 40, Waterdale, the expansion of The Woodlands continues.
In 1997, The honourable Rosie Winterton MP presents Ward Brothers with the Investors in People Award. Employer of the Year Finalist in the Chamber of Commerce Business Award for Ward Brothers.
The today's store has three floors with over 100 different room settings and is located in Doncaster's cultural area, opposite the new Council headquarters and Civic Theatre. Ward Brothers specializes in upholstery, cabinet furniture, beds, bedroom furnishings, dining tables and chairs, home office equipment, occasional items, and floor coverings. Most well-known brand names, such as Ercol, G-Plan, Parker Knoll, Duresta, and Ekornes are included in the collection.
